DEPTFORD IS FOREVER #1 : GIVE US BACK OUR BLOOMIN' ANCHOR!

Deptford High Street, 2013
Paper, ink, string

Deptford Is Forever
(DIF) adopted, adapted and appropriated the language of the sailor’s tattoo to urge the citizens of Deptford to demand the return to the high street of the Deptford Anchor, a potent symbol of our maritime heritage which was removed by the Council during regeneration works. The "Bloomin' Anchor" design was printed onto 5000 white paper bags and distributed free to local independent shop keepers and market traders to use for their customers' purchases. By combining the mariner’s method of self expression (the markings of his life experience) with a call to arms (rather than advertisement or decoration), Deptford Is Forever employed the Situationists' counter-technique of détournement to plant our message within the realm of ordinary consumption and commodity.
